my photography story
Truthfully, my story isn't very exciting, but it is simple! I love pictures. That's it! I love taking them and I love sharing them with others.
I became a photographer out of necessity, really, while working as a reporter for our small-town newspaper, The Lewisburg Daily Journal (now the Standard-Journal) here in Lewisburg, Pa. The budget didn't allow for freelance photographers, so, as a reporter, I was expected to take my own pictures to run with the stories I wrote.
In the beginning, taking pictures of others left me feeling nerve-wracked and uncomfortable. Whenever someone announced "the photographer is here!" I would immediately reply with "Oh, no! The girl with a camera is here, I am not a photographer."
Secretly, though, the more pictures I took, the more I enjoyed it. Eventually, I left that job but continued my journalism career as a freelance writer and photographer. My skills have developed and improved through the years but I can't say I am entirely self-taught. I do believe I have "a good eye," but there's more to creating a beautiful picture than just pushing a button. I have taken many online courses to learn more about digital photography, editing, composition, posing and lighting, etc. I've also had the benefit of several other photographers who have been generous in sharing their time and knowledge with me. I learn something new every day, though, and will continue to work to stay on top of new developments in the photography world!
